Isro chief defends naming of lunar landing site as ‘Shiv Shakti’

Isro chief S Somanath on Sunday said that there is nothing wrong in naming the landing site of Chandrayaan-3 as “Shiv Shakti”. He said that the name was chosen to reflect the “power and strength” of the Indian space program.

Somanath’s comments came after some people criticized the name, saying that it was inappropriate to mix religion and science. However, Somanath said that the name was chosen by a committee of scientists and engineers, and that it was not intended to offend anyone.

“The name ‘Shiv Shakti’ was chosen to reflect the power and strength of the Indian space program,” Somanath said. “It is a tribute to the hard work and dedication of the scientists and engineers who have made this mission possible.”

He added that the name was also chosen to “inspire the youth of India”. “We want to show them that anything is possible if you have the will and determination,” he said.

Chandrayaan-3 is India’s third mission to the moon. The spacecraft is scheduled to launch in August 2023 and will land on the lunar surface in September 2023. The mission will carry a rover and a lander, and will also conduct a number of scientific experiments.

The landing site for Chandrayaan-3 is located in the south polar region of the moon. This region is of particular interest to scientists because it is thought to be rich in water ice.

Somanath said that the landing site was chosen because it is a safe and stable location. He also said that the site is well-suited for the scientific experiments that will be conducted by Chandrayaan-3.

The naming of the landing site has been met with mixed reactions. Some people have welcomed the name, saying that it is a reflection of India’s rich cultural heritage. Others have criticized the name, saying that it is inappropriate to mix religion and science.

Somanath said that he respects the views of those who have criticized the name, but he said that he believes that the name was chosen in a respectful and sensitive manner.

“We wanted to choose a name that would be meaningful to the people of India,” he said. “We believe that the name ‘Shiv Shakti’ is a fitting tribute to the power and strength of our nation.”
