If the name of the film is Khel, then it is important to have a game. Some friends gather with their wives in a social event and in the course of their conversation decide to play a unique game. Cell phones are placed on the table and the condition is that whatever call comes, it has to be played on the speaker and everyone has to listen to it, not read it.
Initially, the friends find this game fun but slowly it becomes dangerous as it starts affecting the relationship and friendship of the husband and wife. As the secrets of their past are revealed, they are forced to face the long-buried truth while trying to avoid the dangers coming their way.
Mudassar Aziz has made a remake of the Italian film Perfect Strangers in Hindi with the name Khel Khel. The story has both fun and tension but the screenplay has not taken full advantage of it. The tension is not such that the audience will bite their nails and the comedy lacks such scenes that can make you laugh a lot. There are some funny scenes but their number should have been more. Mudassar’s work as a writer and director is better.
He has done his best in his film. The director has tried his best to engage the audience with his skill and has created a good atmosphere for the story. All the characters are rich which has made the film shine. Along with this, he has also taken good work from his actors. It is not easy to tell the story of one night and most of the film is set in one location.
Some people will not like this because they may find the film boring. The dialogues are sharp and funny at many places, especially in the scenes between Akshay Kumar and his co-actors which give much needed relief between the tense scenes. The need for tight editing is felt in the second half.
Especially when the film moves towards the end, Akshay Kumar shines in his role. The actor inside him blossoms in the comic role and it is visible on screen. His natural comic timing is commendable. Fardeen Khan has appeared on the big screen after a long time and impresses.
Taapsee Pannu was seen as a victim of overacting in some scenes. Pragya Jaiswal’s debut was great. Amy Virk and Aditya Seal’s acting was average while no improvement was seen in Vaani Kapoor.
Tanishq There is an army of musicians like Bagchi, B Praak, Saji Ali, Rochak Kohli, Guru Randhawa, Raj Ranjodh, Intense and Jassi Sandhu who have created decent tunes. Holi Holika’s picturisation is good. Overall, the story of Khel Khel Mein is unique, but the film based on it is not that entertaining. I give this film two and a half stars out of five.
